16 September - Day 3 - AFRINIC PPM Day 1

Policy Day took off on 16 September. With a packed session and several policy proposals to discuss, the session began with opening speeches by Eddy Kahiyura, the AFRINIC CEO and the AFRINIC Board of Directors Chair Dr Christian Bope. Eddy highlighted AFRINIC activities and welcomed delegates to the meeting. He pointed out that although the meeting was supposed to take place in Kinshasa, DRC, on 31 May to 12 June 2020, the online meeting had to be arranged due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He talked about AFRINIC's 2021-2023 Strategic Plan, the need to be involved in the process, and requested the community to participate in the consultative session next Wednesday, 23 September, as the organisation moves towards finalising the document. Eddy also stated the need for AFRINIC to be agile, and to respond adequately to any challenge, like the current COVID-19 pandemic.

On his part, Dr Bope spoke on AFRINIC's critical role in supporting Internet growth, namely through policy development. Dr Bope closed his speech by thanking all the sponsors for their contribution to the success of the meeting. The sponsors are ICANN, ISOC, dotAfrica and WACREN.

The day continued with discussions on the following current policy proposals:

PDWG co-Chair Elections

The election for PDWG co-chairs to replace AK Oleyede was held. The session was led by Mark Elkins, the chairperson of the 2020 Nominations Committee. AK Oleyede was declared the winner.

 

ASO/AC Elections

The chair of the nominations committee presented the following candidates: Janvier Ngnoulaye and Saul Stein.

The candidates were seeking to replace Noah Maina whose term expires at the end of 2020. Saul Stein of South Africa was elected for a three-year term, from January 2021 to December 2023.
